Program Description

J.D. Power is pleased to introduce the Certified Sustainability Leader- Electric Utility Certification Program. In addition to providing an assessment of performance compared to recommended best practices, the program also enables recognition for sustainability leadership for eligible electric utilities achieving top quintile performance against industry benchmarks, as well as operational performance metrics.

Standards and Criteria

  • Who is eligible? All electric utility companies serving 100,000 or more residential customers in the United States are eligible to participate. This includes investor-owned utilities, municipal utilities, large (ranked) and midsized (unranked) utilities.
  • What is required for an Electric Utility Company to become certified by J.D. Power as a Sustainability Leader?

In order to become a Certified by J.D. Power as a “Sustainability Leader”, Electric utility companies must do the following:

1) Score above the 80th percentile of the J.D. Power Sustainability Index, which evaluates electric utility customer awareness, support, engagement and advocacy for their local utility’s climate sustainability programs and goals.

2) Score above the 80th percentile of Sustainability Proprietary Voice of the Customer Survey.

3) Score 80 or higher on the 100-point Operational Performance Assessment, which includes 64 criterions across four primary categories (Climate change mitigation, Customer engagement and advocacy, Management and leadership, and Resilience and adaptability).

Electric Utility companies that receive passing scores and complete all phases of the program have the opportunity to enter into a licensing agreement to promote their status as a Certified Sustainability Leader.

  • When is the J.D. Power Sustainability Leader Certification conducted?
    • Electric utility companies may enroll in the program on a rolling basis throughout the year. Certifications and are awarded as program requirements are met with an opportunity for renewal eligibility in year two, contingent on ranking within the 80th percentile of the annual J.D. Power Sustainability Index Study.
