BMW's 4 Series model line offers customers various configurations, from convertibles to sedans to hybrids and electric vehicles (EVs).
The 2025 BMW i4—an all-electric four-door sedan—receives similar updates to the gas-powered 4 Series models arriving later this year. Additionally, BMW adds a new all-wheel-drive (AWD) model to the i4 lineup. However, on the 2025 i4, which arrives in the summer of 2024, the rest of the tweaks primarily consist of slight exterior design adjustments and new infotainment software rather than upgrades to each powertrain.

BMW offers the updated i4 with four different power levels depending on the model, including a new AWD entry positioned below the M50. The base eDrive 35 has a single electric motor making 282 horsepower with rear-wheel drive (RWD), while the eDrive 40 uses the same setup but increases output to 335 hp. The new i4 xDrive40 with AWD has dual electric motors creating 396 hp. At the top of the line is the i4 M50, which has an AWD powertrain with 536 hp and 586 pound-feet of torque.

The BMW i4 closely resembles the gas-powered 4 Series Gran Coupe. For 2025, the i4 features a fully enclosed top half of the twin-kidney grille surrounded by matte chrome trim. Opting for the M Sport package now adds a high-gloss black diffuser. The i4 features updated LED headlights, and approaching the vehicle with the key activates a welcome feature. BMW adds two new paint colors to the i4's palette for 2025, including Cape York Green Metallic and Vegas Red Metallic, while numerous custom colors are also available.

BMW is simplifying its interiors by reducing the number of buttons. Most controls, such as climate and entertainment, now utilize the large, curved touchscreen display. Sport seats are standard in the i4, and Vernasca quilted leather trim is available in five colors. The M Sport package also includes new steering wheel designs, including a wheel with a flat bottom rim.

The base eDrive 35 and eDrive 40 models use single-motor RWD setups providing 282 and 335 hp, respectively. For 2025, the i4 lineup adds a new AWD model. The i4 xDrive40 has two electric motors combining for 396 hp and 443 pound-feet of torque, which BMW says will help the car reach 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. Above that is the top i4 M50, which has a similar AWD setup but makes 536 hp and has adaptive dampers and a variable-ratio steering system.

The 2025 i4 runs the latest version of BMW's iDrive infotainment system, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard. The newest version of BMW's mapping software offers an augmented-reality view on the dashboard, providing live video of the driver's view to supplement the in-car navigation. In addition, i4 drivers have improved charging-optimized route planning for long trips.
The i4 provides an excellent EV driving experience without straying too far from its gas-powered 4 Series counterpart. It doesn't have unconventional styling like the Hyundai Ioniq 6 or a minimalistic cabin like the Tesla Model 3. It blends performance, practicality, and modernity into a compelling package with different available powertrain configurations.
